Publisher's Synopsis

When Pat Robson saw the horrific images of `Ceaucescu's children' on TV in the late 1980's, she did more than weep - she set off for Romania to see how she could help. This is the powerful story of her mission to save the Romanian orphans. The cruel population policy of the Stalinist dictator Nicolai Ceaucescu, obsessed with creating a mighty race, had led to desperate and frightened families - already living in grinding poverty - abandoning over 100,000 children. The children were left in orphanages in the most appalling conditions. Pat's vision for helping these children led to her founding the White Cross Mission. Today the Mission runs two orphanages, and has hundreds of volunteers who devote their time to caring for the children. In addition to physical needs being met, many hours are spent with the children in art and music therapy. In addition, a number of children under Pat's care - she is known by all as `Mama Pat' - have been adopted or fostered all over Europe. However, her fight to protect them still continues, and the work of the Mission is far from over. Pat's extraordinary `one woman mission' is all the more remarkable as she had only just recovered from liver cancer when she first went to Romania in 1990. One of the first women to be ordained in the Church of England, she was working as a diocesan youth officer in Truro, and was already involved in adopting and caring for needy children in Britain.
