Hantzsch and Herrmann have, in a series of papers,2 assumed the chemical difference of the various modifications of ethyl p-dihydroxy-terephthalate; they assert that all para-dihydroxy or all benzene derivatives must be colorless, while ketones or quinones must be colored. The question of color is purely arbitrary and does not prove anything whatever. Heretofore more has been considered necessary in order to settle the constitution of a chemical compound.
