About four years ago, the Author made a series of trials of one of his central-valve engines, working non-condensing, and it was his intention to have immediately proceeded with trials of a condensing engine of the same type. A fire at thames-ditton in the year following that in which the former were made, made it necessary, however, to postpone for the time further trials; and it was only about a year ago that he was able to devote his attention to those which form the subject of the present Paper. The engine used was similar to that with which the previous trials were made. The following were the principal points of difference between the two.
