John galt, the future author of the Annals of the Parish, and of other works which deservedly give him a place among the Scottish Classics, was born at Irvine in Ayrshire, on the 2d May 1779. In his early childhood he was of a feeble and delicate, or rather sensitive, constitution, although his com plaints never assumed any serious form. His earliest instructions in reading were given at. Home; and, until his tenth year, he was regularly carried with the rest of his family to Greenock, in which town a part of every season was spent.
