However, in consequence of the vacancy which will shortly occur in the parliamentary representation of Dundee, or, at least, in consequence of the opportunities which, I hope, will arise at, or before, the next General Parliamentary Election, I do not feel that there is any imperative necessity for explaining my political opinions at present. With pertinacious obstinacy, I have explained, in Dundee and elsewhere, what these are, and have made no secret about my preference to represent my native town of Dundee, in the House of Commons, rather than any other constituency. At the General Election of 1885, I thought my time for contesting Dundee as an independent Conservative candidate had, at length, arrived. But, although I had issued my address to the Electors, I retired from the contest in order to give the official Conservative candidate the advantage of having no Conservative opponent, and to save myself the expense of an unsuccessful contest, and, as future circumstances.
