The discourses which compose this volume were suggested by the events of the day, and were deliv ered while those events were still current in the thoughts and the hearts of the people. They are arranged here chiefly in accordance with the order of time. The sermon on Our Heritage occupies the first position, because it forms a fitting introduction to the general subject. The second, on Obedience to the Civil Authority, was preached in the summer of 1861, when the nation began to realize that a war of gigantic proportions. Was upon us, and Christian men were earnestly inquiring the path of duty. The third, on The Signs of the Times, was preached at a camp-meeting in the valley of Wyoming, about the time of the second battle of Bull Run. The fifth.
