Maria de Montserrat Viviana Concepción Caballé i Folch, born on 12th April 1933, Barcelona, Spanish Republic was an operatic soprano. She sang in wide variety of roles, but is best known for the works of Verdi and of the bel canto repertoire, notably the works of Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. Caballé came to international attention when she stepped in for a performance of Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall, New York, US during 1965, before appearing at leading opera houses. Her voice was described as pure but powerful, with superb control of vocal shadings and exquisite pianissimo.
