Poverty and Welfare 1815-1950
This title examines the extent of poverty in England during the nineteenth century and the way in which society responded to this problem - from the replacement of the Old Poor Law with the New Poor Law in 1834 to the growing awareness of poverty in the latter part of the century, culminating in the Liberal reforms in the early twentieth century. A new chapter then goes on to look at how the two World Wars and the depression of the interwar period contributed to the establishment of the Welfare State.
