IN the way of preface I have little to say. The title of this volume is perhaps in some degree likely to deter those for whose benefit it is mainly designed as it may seem to promise a highly speculative discussion and a metaphysical style of language - now become prevalent among the antagonists of modern sceptical philosophy. This has been forced upon many able divines who have undertaken to contend with the rationalism of a foreign school: but, however useful it may be in the counteraction of an infidel philosophy, it has introduced a tone of discussion far above the intellect of the edu cated multitude. I think it for this reason not wholly needless to explain at the outset, the actual character and design of the method of the following Discourses. Whatever degree of originality I may claim for the ar gument in its general application, the matter of its pre.
