He first studied law at the Faculty of Rennes, then carried away by his taste for literature, he went to Paris, where he received a brilliant education.
Some reverses of fortune compelled him to seek em ployment. He became successively a bookseller'3 clerk, a journalist and a professor of rhetoric. His literary work, however, was his labor of love, and from 1835 until 1854, the year of his death, he won many laurels in the realm of fiction.
