Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Mountain and Moor

It is doubtful, when the Welsh and Cumberland mountains were first formed, whether in the life history of the globe, vertebrate types of animal life had as yet come into existence. For ages afterwards, during which the materials were being elaborated out of which other hills and mountains were to be sub sequently formed, there were no warm-blooded animals living on the earth. Every chain of mountains charac terises a distinct geological period, as M. De Beaumont and other geologists have shown, and we may therefore regard each elevation as a monument celebrating the introduction first of one and then of another of those great families of animals and plants, which geology teaches us succeeded each other in the vital history of our planet.
