A writer in a recent number of one of the reviews asked why it is that there are no great prose writers now; no writers to compare with Carlyle or Ruskin or F roude or Newman. With the question itself we are not concerned, but the inclusion of Newman among the great prose masters of his century is worthy of remark, inasmuch as purely theological writers are not usually among the stylists. But Newman was an exception; he was a great writer as well as a great preacher and a great scholar; and his history, his criticism, and his sermons will always be read for their style.
