Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from History the United States: Written for the Chautauqua Reading Circles
Of the Revolution, of its causes, its methods, and its results, we certainly know much more than Judge Marshall knew, or even George Washington, or any of the men of their times. The governments in possession of European archives are no longer coy about opening to students the papers in their pos session. We know, for instance, that George the Third was his own enemy, and the enemy of Great Britain. We know something of the divided councils of England, and of the causes which led to division; of the policies of France and Spain and the other countries of Europe. We are able to make a study much more complete than was in the power of Mr. Botta, Mr. Grahame, Judge Marshall, or any other of the earlier historians.
