The style and the matter of the play will doubtless render it too difficult for first-year students; but it may be profit ably read by those who are sufficiently advanced to study the literature of the Spanish siglo de oro. Bearing in mind that readers of this text are sure to possess a considerable knowl edge of modern Spanish grammar and syntax, the present editor has felt that it would be super?uous to overburden the text with notes of an elementary character. He has therefore limited himself to pointing out certain variations of syntax employed by Calderon, and to offering such sug gestions or free translations as may make clear the occasion ally obscure meaning of the author.
