Un reproche d'une nature beaucoup plus grave, c'est l'absence totale d'humanit� que le g�n�ral Bonaparte manifesta dans sa campagne d'�gypte. Toutes les fois qu'il a trouv� quelque avan tage dans la cruaut�, il se l'est permise, sans que pour cela sa nature f�t sanguinaire. Il n'a pas plus d'envie de verser le sang qu'un homme raisonnable n'a envie de d�penser de l'argent quand cela n'est pas n�ces saire; mais ce qu'il appelle la n�cessit�, c'est son ambition et, lorsque cette ambition �tait compro mise, il n admettait pas m�me un moment qu'il p�t h�siter � sacrifier les autres � lui; et ce que nous nommons la conscience ne lui a jamais paru que le nom po�tique de la duperie.
