Beet plantings for the season are an estimated 27 percent larger in the United States and 14 percent larger in Western Europe. Weather conditions have been gener ally favorable over most of Europe this year. Drought, however, has hit part of the USSR and the Caribbean area recently.
During cane sugar output was higher than a year earlier, while the beet sugar outturn was lower. Cane sugar production of million tons accounted for percent of the world total, while beet sugar output stood at million tons.
