The author applies cost effectiveness analysis to aspects of provision for 16-19 year olds in a 12 institution case study over three cohorts of students.;The principal unit of analysis is the teaching group, but comparisons of performance relevant to policy are made at the level of institutions and the field study material is placed in the context of a critical analysis of the nature of educational costs and contemporary methods of measuring school effectiveness.
