Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Drawings of the Florentine Painters, Vol. 1: Classified, Criticised, and Studied as Documents in the History and Appreciation of Tuscan Art; With a Copious Catalogue Raisonné

A word about the plates. They are intended, in the first place, as specimens of Florentine draughtsmanship. Ten times the number would scarcely suffice to illustrate the text.

In the Catalogue Raisonné I have ventured to give a consecutive numbering to all the drawings. This may at last get the better of a difficulty that hitherto has been serious. Except of the Albertina at Vienna, and of the University Galleries at Oxford, published catalogues of drawings either do not exist or are very incomplete. There has, therefore, been no way of referring brie?y and clearly to a given leaf, and as a makeshift the numbers of Braun's photographs are given. Among many other drawbacks to this course I may cite the fact that but a small part of the material has been photographed by Braun. With a consecutive numbering, any sheet can be referred to in five words, thus, for instance: Berenson, Florentine Drawings, No. 758.
