To write the history of any nation is to narrate the achievements of a few men. The great movements of men almost invariably begin with some indi vidual. Even when a state Of feeling or a form Of thought is generally held by a large body of men, it is necessary for an individual to rise above his fellows, give the common sentiment public utterance and thus crystallize feeling into action. But more frequently the sentiment itself must be created before any unified action can be called forth. It has been well said, Every powerful personality is an Open Channel through which new truth comes among men. The utmost service of the greatest man is to bring us One step nearer the truth.
