Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A Complete Manual for the Cultivation of the Cranberry

We have selected Cape God as the imaginary field of our illustration, inasmuch as that erroneously sup posed exclusively sandy region contains within its boundaries more cranberry yards than any other locality of similar dimensions, that we are aware of. The reason why it should be so, is obvious enough. Its mixture of sand and soil, its peculiar climate, its exemption from early frosts, - matters to which, with others relevant to the subject, we shall hereafter refer - are all favorable to the production of cranberries. Indeed, this berry promises to share, with the oodfish, a great local popularity.
