Excerpt from Shakespeare Jest-Books, Vol. 2: Reprints of the Early and Rare Jest-Books Supposed to Have Been Used by Shakespeare Edited
It may perhaps be desirable to observe that neither Skelton, nor Tarlton, nor Peele, nor Hobson, had any concern whatever in the authorship of the Jests or Tales which pass under their name, and which were for the most part the composition of hack-writers, always at hand, then as now, to avail them selves of the popularity of any name or of any incident to replenish their pockets. To Whom the Editorship of the Merie Tales of Skelton, and of Tarlton's fiests ought to be given, we have no means of telling the Jests of Scogan, Scogin, or Scoggin, as the name is variously spelled, purport to have been col lected by Andrew Borde and the compiler, or rather inventor, of the Pleasant Conceitsl n trod uctory Notice.
