Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A Compendium of Natural Philosophy, Vol. 3 of 3: Being a Survey of the Wisdom of God in the Creation

IN this volume I have endeavoured to give as clear and as comprehensive a view as possible of the whole of inanimate nature, in both its depart ments, the vegetable and the mineral kingdoms. The last of these words, though almost the only popular one that we possess as expressive of matter which is neither animal nor vegetable, is by no means an adequate one; because it ought to in clude the heavenly bodies, which there seems some inconsistency in designating as minerals. Even then, however, there is less impropriety of expres sion than might at first sight be supposed; for excepting the tri?ing knowledge which we have of the earth near its surface, by nature and by mining.
