Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Sorrow and Song

IN two Of these papers - those on Heine and Robertson - I have attempted a study of some aspects of personality from real life, just as in A Book of Strange Sins I endeavoured to bring out certain sides of human nature by depicting characters drawn entirely from imagination. The other articles, though not altogether impersonal, are more critical in intention. AS with the exception of Robertson of Brighton all with whom I deal are poets, and all are notable for the sadness of their life or of their song, my title needs no explanation. The papers have been entirely re-cast and te-written since their appearance in the Fortnzgnt/yf Review, the London Quarterly Review, the New York Independent, Mr. A. H. Miles's Poets and Poetry of tko Century, etc., to the editors of which I am indebted for permission to printthem here.
