Excerpt from Representative Democracy in the United States: An Address Delivered Before the Senate of Union College, on the 26th July, 1841

ON the 4th day of July, 1754, at a place not far distant from that in which we are assembled, a docu ment received the signatures of commissioners repre senting the colonies of Massachusetts, N ew-hamp shire, rhode-island, Connecticut, new-york, Penn sylvania, and Maryland. It expressed the results of a conference, held in pursuance of royal authority, for the purpose of concerting measures to protect and defend the anglo-american Colonies against present encroachments of the French, and expected hostilities from them and the Indians under their control.
