This is not a complete description of alum, which, in fact, is a triple salt, (as seems to have been first discovered by Mar for the combination of sulphuric acid with alumine will not crystallize, without an addition of either potash or ammonia. According to Vauquelin, 100 grains of alum consist of of acid, of alumine, of potash, and of water.
