A former edition-of this pamphlet was dedicated to the Honorable the Secretary of the N avy, who was at the head of that department at the time of its publication, the sole object of which was to hazard an opinion, based on the reasons and suggestions that accompanied it, upon a Subject, which properly considered, I would fain hope might have a beneficial in?uence on the prosperity of our national and commercial marine and with the same object 111 view, I now beg leave, most respectfully to recommend the present impression, with a few additional reinarks, to your protection. An experiment on one ship (ii it can be so called, after the proofs that have been exhibited, ) will in due season, settle the: important question, provided a fair selection of her timber be made.
