Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 3 of 7: From Its Conquest by the Romans to the Present Time, B. C. 146 to A. D. 1864; The Byzantine and Greek Empires, Part II, A D. 1057 1453

The domestics of the Basilian dynasty carried on the work of political change by filling the public offices with their own creatures, and thereby destroying the power of that body of state officials, whose admirable organization had repeatedly saved the empire from falling into anarchy under tyrants, or from being ruined by peculation under aristocratic in?uence. In this manner the scientific fabric of the imperial power, founded by Augustus, was at last ruined in the East as it had been destroyed in the West. The emperors broke the government to pieces before strangers divided the empire.
