In connection with our exploration for treasures of this sort, an important incident may be mentioned. Kawaguchi, a queer little Chinese settlement at the mouth of the Yodo River, below the great city of Osaka, J apan, has a population of nearly three thou sand people from the Celestial Empire, who settled there long before the Meiji Era These Chinese colonists are mostly exporters, and include rich merchants and descendents from the high Mandarins, as well as refugees from political oppression. Many families brought with them from China' their belongings, which included heirlooms and valuable furniture.
