It assumes more determinism in human affairs than evidence generally warrants, certainly, in the present case. Still, once one has dismissed the idea that Americans in the 1890's lived only that the l9oo's might flourish, it is possiblexto agree that much which the reformers of the earlier time projected, their twentieth-century followers were able to test. This fact alone should justify a closer attention to the aims and views of liberals of the late nineteenth century than they have often received.
