It has been found advisable to exclude the separate articles on places situated in the modern London portion of the old county of Middlesex from this volume so as to print London altogether. The great city is overshadowing all around it, and I fear it does not give back much in place of what it takes away. Nothing is more marked than the change indicated by the growth of modern London. It has eaten into Middlesex and destroyed the home of mulberry-trees and cedar-trees and other memorials of an old domestic life more dis tinctive in every way than what appears now in the eternal sameness of the rows of bricks and mortar which do duty for the residences of nineteenth-century Londoners. The collection of the papers written by the various contributors to the Gentleman's Magazine draws marked attention to the change in ideas on home life during the last century, or even half-century - a change which has caused the beauti ful fields of Middlesex to be handed over to the speculative builder.
The contribution to the history of Monmouthshi're is very slight.
