Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from A Report on the Hygiene of the United States Army: With Descriptions of Military Posts
Ou the afternoon preceding eaeh visit to the quarters, the jars intended for the reception of air were inspected, to determine their perfect dryness, and a corresponding number of twooounee. Viats were filled from the baryta reservoir, corked tightly, weighed, and the weight marked on the label of each.
At the visit, the contents of the room were noted, and the walls and windows examined for the discovery of any notable inlets, by which time the jar was conceived to have attained the tempera tare of its surroundings. The air from on a level with the men's bunks, one and a half to two feet from the ?oor, was then driven into it, by a large robber syringe in the absence of a bellows, sixty fioreible strokes of the piston being made in each case, to insure the thorough charging of the jar with the air required. The contents of one of the baryta vials were poured in and the jar imme diately eorked with a tightly-fitting rubber cork, and agitated to diffuse the solution over its sides. The vial was also carefully eorked, and the jar and room for which it had been used, wgether with the ternperatnre, were noted on its label. On two occasions about 10 grams of the baryta solution were retained in the vial and tested with the acid, for the discovery of deterioration.
