Il concetto che si ha comunemente della Letteratura, che sia lo studio delle regole del dire, non sembra vero. Queste regole non sono universali e stabili, ma diverse nei varii popoli ed in uno stesso popolo in varii tempi: e se anche fossero sempre e dovunque le medesime, la Letteratura sa rebbe una forma vuota di sostanza, e non avrebbe ragione di esistere.
