Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Quatre Comdies: Les Caprices de Marianne; Barberine; On Ne Saurait Penser A Tout; Bettine

The life of Musset was not eventful. His forty seven years were spent in Paris for the most part, ex cept for the journey to Italy with George Sand. It was the life of a man given to society, and in his later years to deplorable dissipation. Lanson has admirably summed it up: il n'y a rien en somme que de commun dans la vie de Musset: beaucoup de folie, beaucoup de passion, la fin le naufrage dans l'habitude insipide et tenace, avec l'amertume de la dsillusion impuissante.

He was born in Paris in 1810, of a good family, and had an excellent education. He published his first poems when he was only eighteen years Old, and in spite of periods during which he wrote nothing, his best work had been done by the time he was in the early thirties. His temperament was not one to involve him in any noteworthy events. His love - affair with George Sand stands out more than anything else. So much has been written on this subject that it is not necessary to enlarge upon it here.
