HE sketches which compose these volumes have been written by me at various times within the past few years, and for the most part have appeared in the columns of the Times, Builder, Once a Week, City Press, Queen, and Globe. They have no sequence or connection with each other, each one being complete in itself; their point Of unity being Simply this, that they treat Of persons, places, and things now or heretofore connected with that Great Metropolis, in the growth, progress, annals, and fortunes Of which it is impossible for an educated English man or Englishwoman not to feel an interest. If it be true, as Dr. Johnson tells us, that the full tide Of human life ?ows in the main streets Of London as it does no where else, I venture to.
