At this point his attention strayed to the balcony where Miss Gloucester was now reading aloud, in a clear voice, to two companions, evidently relatives from their likeness to her and to each other. They were girls of nineteen and twenty-four apiece. One was tall, very elegant, sallow and dark. She seemed languid and kept her melancholy glance fixed on the white clouds of the horizon. The other had auburn hair and a white skin. She sat well in the sunshine, which showed her nose and cheeks almost powdered with small freckles. They were not unbecoming; the purity of her prohle, the thickness of the lashes which darkened her hazel eyes, and her long slender throat were ?attered by the bright light.
