Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The British Academy Records of the Social and Economic History of England and Wales, Vol. 4: I. A Terrier of Fleet, Lincolnshire; II. An Eleventh-Century Inquisition of St. Augustine's, Canterbury

IN parts of mediaeval England physical and topographical features necessarily caused variations, greater or less, from the usual manorial forms of agrarian life, and the manor had to adapt itself to local characteristics. This study, introductory to the terrier of Fleet, deals with such variations as they are found in general in the fen country near the Wash, a district in Which from early times constant fear of inundation led to the imposition of heavy public burdens for the defence of the land, and the vast stretches of fen and marsh gave Opportunities for peculiar industries and a Special prominence to pasture rights. For more particular information regarding the conditions within a typical fen Village it turns to the full description of F leet in Lincolnshire which is contained in the terrier of that Vill.
