Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from William Wilberforce

What they did in Paris does not appear; but we learn that by special invitation they joined the Court at Fon tainbleau, then in all its splendour, under Louis XVI. And Marie Antoinette: and there the beautiful and light-hearted queen, having heard the story about Rheims, rallied her visitors, and asked Wilberforce whether he had lately heard from his friend the Dr. Franklin was then in France, and he received the young Englishman with much interest, as the latter had already expressed his disapproval of war with America. With La Fayette, too, Wilberforce came in contact, and found him assuming republican habits. When the fine ladies of the Court would attempt to drag him to the card-table, he shrugged his shoulders, with an affected contempt for the customs and amusements of the whole regime.
