But, neverthelefs, evolution had not yet achieved a com plete viétory. Fines, imprifonment, and unjuft taxation, taxation to build churches and to fupport a religion which they did not believe, were {till infiic'ied with a rapacious hand. Againft this Intolerance, for more than twenty years, Mr. Checkley {truggled on, nothing daunted by fines, penalties, and perfonal abufe, gaining one point after another, until at length he law the confiimmation of his wifhes in the enaét ment of a general law, which, for the firft time fince the planting of the colony, placed the members of the Church of England on an equal footing with the Standing Order.
