Der Aufforderung, für das Handbuch des deutschen Unterrichts eine Darstellung unserer Heldensage zu liefern, habe ich vor Jahren nicht ohne lebhafte Bedenken nachzu kommen versprochen. Die Aufgabe, einen Gegenstand nach allen Seiten darzulegen, mit dem eine frühe Neigung und lebhafte Beschäftigung mich enge verbunden hatten, schien verlockend genug. Für ihre Durchführung aber mußte ich Schwierigkeiten befürchten, die vielleicht weniger aus dem Stoffe selbst aufzusteigen drehten, so bedenklich er sein mag, als aus dem persönlichen Verhältnisse, in das ich allmählich zu ihm geraten war. Ich hatte mir für eine Reihe von Sagen Anschauungen bilden müssen, die von den im Schwange befindlichen sich nicht unbeträchtlich entfernten. In einem Lehrbuche mußten solche entweder beweislos ausgesprochen oder aber völlig unterdrückt werden, was beides gleich un behaglich schien. Mit einsichtiger Geduld ließ der Herr Verleger mir darum auf meine Bitte die Zeit, einen Vor läufer abzufertigen, der wenigstens meine Anschauungen über die Vorgeschichte der Nibelungensage in Gestalt einer Unter suchung ausführen und begründen sollte.
