Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Memoir of Charles Burroughs, D.D: Prepared for the New Hampshire Historical Society
After leaving college, Mr. Burroughs pur sued the study of theology with Dr. Gardiner, who, in addition to his literary attainments, had no little reputation as a reader and a pul pit orator. Dr. Gardiner's reading is said to have been pre-eminently graphic, so that, if the lesson of the day were narrative or de scrlptive, his hearers almost fancied that they saw what they heard. Accustomed from infancy to this style of reading, Mr. Bur roughs insensibly grew into it; and it was but one of the many prestiges of success with which he entered on his profession.
