Curiously enough, it never dawned upon my mind, until long after I had written this book, that it, like most books, might need some sort of preface. Not that I am even yet sure it does, but as I like prefaces myself, and fancy there must be many who share this taste, I feel that there can be at worst no harm in sounding some sort of preliminary note. But the difficulty is as to the note I should strike.
