On a trouvé à Pompe1 un calendrier gravé sur le marbre (fig. On gravait ainsi non seulement les actes ou les proclamations d'importance, mais de simples affiches officielles. Quelques chartes lapidaires ont été conservées qui datent du moyen âge, antérieures pourtant au treizième siècle. En Orient, les pierres précieuses mème recevaient des inscriptions (fig. 3 à le Cabinet des Ant1ques, à la Bibliothèque nationale, possède un cône de basalte trouvé dans l'euphrate et couvert de caractères.
