Excerpt from An Account of the Dangers to Which I Have Been Exposed, Since the 31st of May, 1793: Interspersed With Historical Remarks
Y fituation in thefe caverns, as well as for merly, afi'ords me but little leifure. I can only make notes; my Reader mufi not expect cor rear language, or even cepious narrative. The' faet is, what I write, cannot be called hif'tory, nor even memoirs; it is merely a collection of memo randums, which may be ufeful hereafter, fhould I find time to write; or, if I fhould not, they may 'a?ifi another. What I write however, may be de pended upon; for I declare, fo facred is my refpee't {br truth, that I would confider as criminal, the very thought of falfehood. Indeed, our conduct can only be ju?ified by truth. T hofe ridiculous and bale fallehoods, with which we have been over whelmed, to pave the way for our deflme'tion, can be overcome by truth only.
