The following Hymns do not, as Will be seen, form anything like a perfect collection, but are given as a specimen of a much larger and more complete Work. The Author has had a double end in view in the composition of them first, to furnish some simple and original hymns for sing ing in Catholic churches; secondly, to provide English Catholics With a hymn-book for reading, in the simplest and least involved metres: and both these objects have not unfrequently required considerable sacrifice in a literary point of view.
