Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Uncollected Lectures

While the brief introductions supplied for the individual reports are calculated to call attention to whatever is new to Emerson readers, it should perhaps be said here that the most valuable of these reports are the first and last, because they are much longer than the others. Particularly impor tant is the lecture on Natural Religion, the unusual length of which is matched by a subject of unusual impor tance to students of Emerson's thought, for it is the most complete statement of Emerson's religious beliefs made during his later years. Moreover, it appears substantially as Emerson delivered it, and has not been, like most of his later essays, rearranged or cut by his biographer or his son.
