It is seldom, perhaps, in the preface to lec tures of this kind, that remarks of a character so personal should be introduced. But it is hardly possible to do otherwise at the beginning of such an undertaking; and I shelter myself under the great example of my predecessor when I acknowledge the personal kindness and sym pathy which I received from the inhabitants of the beautiful university town in which the lectures were delivered.
