Excerpt from The Journal of the Society of Arts, Vol. 23: From November 20, 1874, to November 12, 1875
On his return home, after so many years' services, he felt the devotion of an Indian servant towards the country and people amon whom the best years of his life hadbeen spent, an to whom his labours were unremittingly devoted. His efforts were prompted b no ho of honour or reward, forbe it said, to the s e 0 our administrators, that neither then, nor at any after time, was an honorary dis tinction or post of emolument at me bestowed upon him. This is the common fate of many a distinguished man, and it is not to be wondered that, in the exile from England, and in the chill of official thanklessness and neglect, some there are who shrink within themselves and retire from public life. Dr. Cam bell's exertions were not only disinterested, but any often entailed on him e e and absence from famil associations.
