Dans sa jeunesse, Chaetas a ete fait prisonnier par une tribu ennemie il est sauve par Atala, la fille du chef. Avec elle, il fuit dans les bois ou ils rencontrent le pere Aubry, un venerable missionnaire qui a fonde pres de la une colonie d'indiens convertis au Christianisme. Le pretre emmene les deux sauvages dans sa cabane. Chactas, qui aime Atala et qui sait en etre aime, voudrait unir sa destinee a la sienne. Mais la jeune fille, qui se croit obligee au celibat par un voeu de sa mere, se suicide en buvant un liquide empoisonne. Le pere Aubry n'a que le temps de recevoir sa confession et son dernier soupir.
