Memories of friends past are as important as, and more sustaining than, memories of times past. Geoffrey Wheatcroft found his thoughts turning again and again to a number of people he had known. Some were friendly acquaintances, some close friends, some unknown, some famous. The portraits in this unusual album include writers like Shiva Naipaul and Philip Larkin. There are friends from publishing: Roger Machell and Anthea Jospeh, and from journalism: Sam White, Mark Boxer, Dwight Macdonald. Intellectual life is represented by the musician Hans Keller and by Canon Gareth Bennett, the author's old Oxford tutor, whose life ended so dramatically and tragically.
