Publisher's Synopsis

Emma and Sally are practising for the cross country competition, a pairs event. It is against the clock and requires intelligence, perseverance, skill and stamina - Sheltie of course has them all. Out in a thunderstorm they take shelter in an old cottage which is supposed to be haunted and Sheltie discovers that the ghost is an eccentric old man who doesn't like modern things - or visitors! He's not very friendly at first but he loves animals and Sheltie soon wins his approval. On the day of the race Emma and Sally are doing well but are forced off course when Sheltie races off to visit the cottage again. Smoke and flames are coming from the chimney and once again Emma and Sheltie must ride to the rescue.
